what exactly do you mean by "resolution of an image in physics"???
Resolution of picture is calculated only in 2 ways, like below..
giving dimensions of an image e.g., 800 X 600 (length X breadth)
or in pixels 1.3MegaPixel or 2.5 MP (total pixels in the image)


40 X 60 size image consists 2400 pixels,
so u can say resolution of it is either as 40 X 60 or as 2400 pixels.

Resolution of image by an optical device is a measure of the least separation/angular seperation between two objects whose images by the optical device appear distinct. What device (telescope, mcroscope,..) do you have in mind
