The virus was discovered by chance in 1975 by Australian virologist Yvonne Cossart. It gained its name because it was discovered in well B19 of a large series of petri dishes labelled in this way.

Not in this case, but in most cases it is way to identify them based on their strain. ie. influenza H1N1 the H=haemaglutinin and the N= neuraminidase , both of which are proteins that make up the virus coat. ie. E.coli 0157 H7 - the numbers stand for its' serotype. Hope this was helpful.
