I am thinking about becoming an EMT but have some questions.

1. What is the scedual? I have heard that some EMTs only work two 24 hour days a week, and have also heard that other EMTs work a normal 5 day work week. I am confused by this.

2. Less importaint but I need to know is what is the pay? I'm looking for a career right now and want to know if you can sustain a family with just being an EMT. Or if you only work 2 days do you need another job.

3. Is there any way that I can go to school online while doing an aprenticeship? I am in a position where I need to work full time, so that leaves little room for going to school fuil time. Can you aprentice to become an EMT while go to school online so you can work full time is something I need to know.

4. Does the job get to you or cause any stress? I may only be 20, but I am really big on family and have found someone I want to have a family with. I have heard that firefighter and police familys gave stress, but do EMT families have added stress because of what EMTs see amd go through is something I want to put into consideration.

5. Can you work as an EMT and still work towards becomming a parimedic? If EMTs work full time which is what I want, after you become a basic EMT is it difficult do move up to an advanced EMT then to a paramedic is something else I am concerned about. I want a career that I can move forward with and if I become an EMT I want to become a paramedic after a couple of years.

I want to become an EMT mainly to help people, serve my community, and because I want a career that I enjoy. But my main concern is if it's not full time should I just consintrait on another career and work on becomming an EMT later. I'm really interested in this as a career, so I need to know everything I can so please tell me any information you can above my questions.

I was an EMT, it was a great job but your shifts depend upon where you work. Some have 24, some do not, some towns only do volunteer, some like NYC have paid and it is substantial. EMS is a calling, you cannot get into it for the money... because sadly I made less than a person who managed a fast food restaurant( in upstate ny and nj) In the city it is better but you will never be paid what you are worth anywhere... EMS never put a stress on my marriage, or any personal relationships...but I think it depends on the person, can you separate yourself from work in general? Like if you are a secretary can you go home and not replay work over and over? If you do than this job is not for you, if you can still have a life outside work then it is fine.... the most tragic aspects of this job are not as many as the movies and tv show, most of the time you get called for stupid things (my husband can attest and he is a fireman in Harlem) The real stuff stinks but you kind of develop a protective skin... you can definitely work toward a medic, in fact some places will pay for you to go to school if you are working as an emt for your medic... hope this helps

My good friend became an emt and on top of having to pay alot for the course he took a pay cut from making $9.80 as a lifeguard for Disney to $9.50 as an emt. Apparently the $ is in being a paramedic not emt

stop.
go to the ambulance service in your town and ask to do a ride along. ask all of your questions. but they get sued as much or more than cops. they work long hard hours, very few promotions, sometimes very nasty work.
go see.
