Do fractures, or tears always show up on X-rays and MRI's

especially if there has been no radiological evidence on an MRI of a fracture (and MRIs are *usually* pretty good at picking up those things). But, the redness and warmth that you describe concerns me a LOT. Since you fell on dirty gravel, it is very likely it could be infected, and infections love any holes in skin.......

You don't say who "they" are, but "they" at this point ought to be orthopedic specialists. You may have an infection. You should be getting better, not worse at 19 days out.

Good. Sometimes family docs try to treat this kind of thing when they should refer it. I hope you get some relief soon!

I agree with Pangolin that at 3 weeks out, you should be getting better, especially if there has been no radiological evidence on an MRI of a fracture (and MRIs are *usually* pretty good at picking up those things).

You NEED to contact the orthopedic doc and let him know specifically the symptoms you are experiencing.

Imaging studies aren't perfect, but there's a difference between a wrist and a patella (other than the obvious!): it may matter in the wrist, where the propensity for the navicular to have a non-union has given rise to the saying "There's no such thing as a sprained wrist in the ER." They're all immobilized, just in case. With a patella, even if they'd seen a definite fracture without displacement, your management wouldn't have been much different. The heat suggests you might have developed a septic bursitis, or even a septic joint, which may be urgent. I'd suggest a quick re-examination, because even if their diagnosis was right, it doesn't mean you are protected from later complications.
