20. Write a piecewise function that gives the Social Security tax. f(x) =0.For x values between 0 and 72600 graph the linear equation y = 0.062xwith an open circle at x = 72600,then graph the constant line y = 4501.......
The amount of Social Security tax you pay, part of your Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) deductions, depends on your annual income. As of 1999, you pay 6.2% of your income if it is less than $72,600. If your income is at least $72,600, you pay a fixed amount of $4501.20. Write a piecewise function that gives the Social Security tax.
1) write and graph a piece wise function that gives the social security tax
2) how much social security tax do you pay if you make 30000 per year

-
1) Let your income be given by x

f(x) = 0.062x if x < 72600 or 4501.20 if x >= 72600

For x values between 0 and 72600 graph the linear equation y = 0.062x with an open circle at x = 72600, then graph the constant line y = 4501.20 for all values of x > 72600 with a closed circle at x = 4501.2

2) If you make 30,000 you make less than 72600, so you pay: 0.062(30000) = $1860
