My teacher says you have to come up with an equation. But im not sure how. Please help as he is setting the test and told us there will be something similar! Thanks!^you started with 5, you ate 1/3 of one,......
I have an exam tomorrow and I'm not sure how to do this question, any help is appreciated:

I have 2/3 of an apple. Jade eats 3/4 of another apple. How many apples are remaining if I had 5 apples to begin with?

I'm clueless! My teacher says you have to come up with an equation. But i'm not sure how. Please help as he is setting the test and told us there will be something similar!

Thanks!

5 - 2/3 - 3/4 = Apples remaining

^you started with 5, you ate 1/3 of one, and Jade ate 3/4 of one.

Now use the common denominator of 12 to simplify the fraction:

5 - 2/3 - 3/4

(60/12) - (8/12) - (9/12)
(60 - 8 - 9)/12
43/12

~3.58 apples left.

Hope that helps.

ok so you hav 2/3 of one apple, and just 1/4 of another apple because jade ate 3/4 so that right there is 0.9166 apples so if there were 5 apples to start with then 5 - 0.9166 = 4.0834

I want to turn these into a % because that's the path i know best, so (2/3)*100=66.66% of one apple, and (1/4)*100=25% of one apple
total 66.66+25=91.66% of an apple

move the decimal place 2 places left = 0.9166, then subtract that from total of 5 apples:
5 - 0.9166 = 4.0834 total apples.

This does give you the correct answer but your teacher may want a more specific answer like subtracting/adding the fractions without turning them into decimals. Decimals are just easiest for me to work with but ive always been just below average in almost every subject i learn so make sure you get more suggestions on other ways to solving this.
