You should whenever possible attempt to factor by grouping. If that doesn't work then resort to the quadratic equation.
-3x^2 - 4x - 4 = 0
Looking for a*c | the sum of the two equals -4 (b)
12
==
1 * 12
2 * 6
3 * 4
[Or both numbers multiplied together could be -)
In this case, since the last term is negative, it looks like we want to use the quadratic equation to solve, because we realize there is no way that we can get -4 by multiplying two positive or two negative numbers together (they will always be positive). Therefore we rely on the quadratic equation:
-(-4)+-((-4)^2-4(-3)(-4))^(1/2)
--------------------------------------
(2(-3))
You will get two outputs where one will take the + from the +- and the other will be the - from the +-.
You must use the Quadratic equation for this.
using the equation you will get:
4 +- 8 / -6
which gives 2 possible answers of:
x = -2
x = 2/3
