The question is 3 1/2 - 1 3/4. I know to answer is 1 3/4 but how is that the answer?
I know you find the common denominator.
I know you line the ones digits and fractions parts up.
I don't know what happens in the borrowing.
If I borrow 1 from the 3 way 2/4 doesn't turn into 3/4 making it
2 3/4 - 1 3/4 making the answer 1

Multiply the number in front (3) by the denominator (2) then add it to the numerator (6 + 1 = 7) so you have 7/2. Then do the same to the other fraction. Then find the common denominator like you said and subtract them.
-
first you turn it into a improper fraction
7/2 - 7/4
find the common denominator and what you do to the top you must do to the bottom
7(4)/2(4) - 7(2)/4(2)
28/8 - 14/8
now that you have the same denominator you can subtract them
14/8
now you have to put it into an improper fraction which is 1 6/8
and then you have to put it into lowest terms which is 1 3/4
7/2 - 7/4
find the common denominator and what you do to the top you must do to the bottom
7(4)/2(4) - 7(2)/4(2)
28/8 - 14/8
now that you have the same denominator you can subtract them

7/2 - 7/4
= 14/4 - 7/4
=7/4 or 1 3/4
= 14/4 - 7/4
=7/4 or 1 3/4
