Math ratio problem. Please help!!!!!

If the middle section is 4/12 = 1/3 = 10 feet, then the total length of the board is 30 feet.......
If a blank of wood is split into 3 pieces with a ratio of 3:4:5 and the middle piece is 10 feet what is the overall length?  Please help I don't understand it. If possible please explain with the answer.

If the 3 pieces have lengths with a ratio of 3:4:5, then their lengths are 3x, 4x, and 5x for some value of x. If the middle piece is 10 ft., then 4x=10 or x = 2 1/2

The overall length = 12x = 3(4x) = 3(2 1/2) = 7 1/2 feet.

If you ratio is 3:4:5 and the middle one (which is 4 in the ratio) is 10 then, 4 has been multiplied by some number to make 10. What is this number?

4a = 10 ==> a = 10/4 = 5/2

Then all you have to do is to id to multiply 3:4:5 by 5/2 and you get:

15/2 : 10 : 25/2

So the block lengths are 7.5, 10, and 12.5

Adding these up gives you 30! Which is your answer

With a 3:4:5 ratio, this means each portion is 1/(3+4+5) = 1/12 of the total length.

If the middle section is 4/12 = 1/3 = 10 feet, then the total length of the board is 30 feet.
