Math - Simultaneous Equation

......
2x – y – 4 = 0
y = 1 – 1/2x

Could someone please help me solve these simultaneous equations?

-
2x - y - 4 = 0
y = 1 - 1/2 x

Plug the second into the first (substitution method):

2x - (1 - 1/2 x) - 4 = 0

2x - 1 + 1/2 x - 4 = 0

Combine like terms:

5/2 x - 5 = 0

Move the 5 over:

5/2 x = 5

Multiply by 2/5:

x = 2

Now, plug this into the second original equation to solve for y:

y = 1 - 1/2 (2)

y = 1 - 1

y = 0

So, the solution is (2, 0)

-
Get the first equation in term of y:

2x -y-4 = 0
-y = -2x + 4
y = 2x - 4 Now you can set first equation = to second equation

1 - 1/2x = 2x - 4 solve x
-2x - 1/2x = -4 - 1

- 3/2 x = -5 then 3/2x = 5 so

x = 5 x 2/3 = 3 1/3 now substitute x into any of the above to find y

-
y = 1 - (1/2) x

2x = y + 4
2x = 1 - (1/2) x + 4
(5/2)x = 5
x = 10/5
x = 2

y = 1 - (1/2)(2)
y = 1 - 1
y = 0

x = 2 , y = 0
