h metres, of a baseball as a function of the time, t seconds, since being hit. The ball hit the ground before a fielder could catch it........
Okay this is an application of a quadratic function... how would you solve this question??
the function h=-5t^2 + 25t + 1 models the height, h metres, of a baseball as a function of the time, t seconds, since being hit. The ball hit the ground before a fielder could catch it...
a) how much time passed before the ball hit the ground?
b) for how many seconds was the ball at a height of 28m or higher?
c) what was the max height that the ball reached?
d) how high was the ball off the ground when it was hit?

** i need to know not because this is homework, but because i am reviewing for a test tomorrow and am super confused on how to get any of these ! any attempt is appreciated !

Well, I'm not going to go in order. For d, you know the ball was 1 meter off the ground when it was hit because when t=0, h=1.

In order to find the time that the ball hits the ground, set h=0, because you want the height to be equal to 0. Then, just solve the equation for t by factoring.

In order to find the max height, just find the vertex of the parabola. You can obtain this by writing the equation in vertex form.

To see when the height is 28 m or higher, just put in 28 in for h, and make it 28 is greater or equal to -5t^2 + 25t + 1 and solve for t.

Hope I kinda helped:)
