molecular formula is C2H6 ........
A gaseous hydrocarbon composed of 80% carbon mass. Determine the empirical formula of the compound, if it's known that the compound mass of 1 liter (STP) is 1.34 grams! Determine the molecular formula too!


Please solve that question with the step. I'm very grateful by your help.

1 mole of the gas occupies 22.4 liters
we have 1 liter of gas so we have 1 liter // 22.4 liters / mole = 0.04464 moles
these have mass of 1.34 g so molar mass = 1.34g / 0.04464 moles = 30.02 g / mol

the compound has 80% C = 80% of 30g = 24 g or 2 moles of C
these of 20 % of H = 20 % 0f 30g = 6 g or 6 moles of H

molecular formula is C2H6 ..
empirical formula is CH3
