Valance configuration of carbon

Carbon has 4 electrons in it's outer valence (bond) shell, 2 in the s orbital (2s2) and 2 in p (2p2)

So in short, 2s2, 2p2

Bear in mind that carbon usually undergoes hybridization so the configuration can also be sp3 (or some other).

Usually in the shape of a 3 sided pyramid where each valence electron resides mainly around each corner of the pyramid shape.
