Why do Americans freak out about mushroom picking?

And the mushrooms that we eat are grown in mushroom farms. Barely any of us know if any plant is poisonous or not so were taught not to pick any random berries we see in the trees from the danger of being poisoned for exmaple. Of course we have research but not a lot of people do it since we just go to the supermarket. I guess the U.S. is way to urbanized lol XD Hope you enjoy your foreign exchange student trip!......
Well yes a lot of people do have the image of mushrooms are for getting high. The other thing is some think that all mushrooms are poisonous. It is true especially in the east that there are a lot of poisonous Amanita bisporigera mushrooms which can be really easily confused with edible mushrooms by many people. It is not a very common practice among many in the US so the idea seems concerning.

i see dead squirrels is absolutely correct about not being familiar with the mushrooms here. Many people are hesitant to even travel a few miles from where they were picking let alone half way across the world.

We don't like eating mushrooms at all unless their thoroughly inspected by the FDA which is the agency in the U.S. that approves that everything we eat is safe. You know what mushrooms are edible in Finland, NOT what mushrooms are edible in the United States. Mushrooms in one location may look exactly the same as edible mushrooms in another location yet be poisonous. There are many examples of people visiting another country getting sick and even dying from consuming mushrooms that look like edible mushrooms in their home country. Your host family likely saved you from potentially life threatening health issues.

Americans in general have nothing against picking and consuming wild mushrooms, most people just aren't knowledgeable about native plants and fungi and their different utilizations. I was born and have lived my entire life in USA and I often go out to pick some native, edible plants. It has been my personal observation that many people just don't value plants and fungi as they should, perhaps this is a product of a lack of decent botany and mycology education below college level studies.
