I am doing a geo assignment and am having a little trouble find the three most important natural features in the Niagara Falls region what would you consider to be the three most important and why?
-
Niagara Glen
- a spectacular deep gorge - rugged trail to gorge - whirlpool circles counter-clockwise - Carolinian Forest - eroding of Niagara Escarpement by Niagara River
- Wintergreen Flats was the site of the ancient water falls - Lockport limestone rock - formed over 400 million years ago - a salt water ocean first covered this region - rock layer about 80 feet thick
- ancient falls caused layers of rock to erode and break away, falling to river bottom, creating today's Devil's Hole Rapids
Niagara Falls themselves - Horseshoe Falls - geological history in making - Falls has moved back seven miles in 12,500 years and may be the fastest moving waterfalls in the world

Dufferin Islands
- the “Burning Spring”. a natural gas well - the bubbling of the surface water
"...Passing up on the Canadian side some mile and a half above the Falls, we come to "the burning springs."
The water of this spring is surcharged with sulphureted hydrogen gas. A rough building now covers it,
and the water is confined in a fountain. Placing a barrel over it the gas is collected and escapes through
a tube in the upper end. Apply to this a lighted torch and it burns with a brilliant flame till extinguished.
The taste of the water was strongly sulphurous..." - 1856 author unknown
