Hi everyone,

I am learning subtraction with my mom and I have found a problem that I cannot fix so I was told to figure it out. So my mom is writing this for me on the internet so we can get help from other people (maybe in a similar situation).

When I have a subtraction problem I rename the numbers (taking from the tens/hundreds) but sometimes my answer is 1 below the intended answer (checked with adding the found answer and the number given in the equation).

What is going on?

What he is attempting to do is:

1. You cannot take 1 from 3 so he is borrowing from the 6 (becoming 5) and having the 1 turn into a 10.

2. 10 - 3 = 7 (first spot filled)

HERE is your error. When you borrow 1 from the 6, the 1 becomes 10 PLUS the 1 in the 1s column gives you
11 - 3 = 4 (first spot filled)

Where's the equation?

Not really sure--can you show some examples of when this has happened?

Subtracting, say, 824 from 913
Subtract 4 form 3 ... you get a negative number (which you don't want), so you borrow a 10 from the 10's column
and you subtract 4 fro 13 = 9
Now you have 820 to be subtracted from 900
20 from 00 is a negative, so we borrow 100 from the hundred's column
2 from 10 = 8
and now we have 800 from 800 8 - 8 = 0
and so the answer is 89
