the phospholipids are arranged with the fatty acid chains facing the interior of the membrane. As a result, the interior of the membrane is A. hydrophobic.B. hydrophilic.......
1. Lipids form the barriers surrounding various compartments within an organism. Which property of lipids makes them a good barrier?
A. Many biologically important molecules are not soluble in lipids.
B. Lipids are polymers.
C. Lipids store energy.
D. Triglycerides are lipids.
E. Lipids release large amounts of energy when broken down.

2. In a biological membrane, the phospholipids are arranged with the fatty acid chains facing the interior of the membrane. As a result, the interior of the membrane is
A. hydrophobic.
B. hydrophilic.
C. charged.
D. polar.
E. filled with water.

3. Oils melt at a lower temperature than fats because
A. oils and fats are not the same kind of molecule.
B. fats contain more saturated fatty acids than oils.
C. fats contain more unsaturated fatty acids than oils.
D. oils are made by plants.
E. fats are common in animals.

4. The compounds in biological membranes that form a barrier to the movement of hydrophilic materials across the membrane are
A. integral membrane proteins.
B. carbohydrates.
C. lipids.
D. nucleic acids.
E. peripheral membrane proteins.

5. Which type of membrane protein would likely be most easily removed in a laboratory experiment?
A. Integral proteins
B. Channel proteins
C. Peripheral proteins
D. Transmembrane proteins
E. Gated channels

6. Cell Junctions: Which of the following is not a function of animal tight junctions?
A. Forcing substances to pass through epithelial cell membranes rather than intercellular spaces
B. Restricting movement of materials within intercellular spaces
C. Allowing communication between adjacent epithelial cells
D. Restricting movement of proteins and phospholipids within the cell membrane
E. Dividing the cell into an apical and basolateral region

1. A
Think of the fact that lipids are hydrophobic (non-polar) and things like sugars, carbs, proteins, etc are often hydrophilic (Polar). Also remember cell membrane is based off a phospholipid bilayer, so think of how cell diffuse works.

2. A
Easy enough. think of the membrane looking like O==O a double layer of phospholipid. Draw out phospholipid, analyze it and decide what each part is. Identify the phosphate, carbon chain, and fatty acids.

3. B
Saturated means along the carbon chain, all the carbons have H's. The more unsaturated the easier it is broken. Just remember, oils are healthier than fats so they are "slimmer"

4. C
Since lipids are hydrophobic a hydrophilic molecule cannot cross without a lot of energy used

5. B
Check me on that, but it seems logical as those are all along the membrane

6. Not so sure but maybe E
