roberto say: the lynchpin of you question is faulty,,your 'given' has not been established, save earth from what?
-
MysteryGuy say: Curiosity.
-
Alexander say: Because it's there! And the jury is still out regarding our future on Earth.
-
Jim Moor say: We desire to have humankind on 2 planets just in case there's a global disaster.
We need to vastly reduce human population if we want this planet to survive.
-
ReductioAdAstronomicus say: More frighteningly, the illusion some people have that hordes of people can somehow drift calmly up to Mars and set up a new life there, is an excuse to go on trashing the Earth, because, you know, when it all turns to shitt here, we just go off to Mars, don't we.
The Mars distraction is just yet another excuse for people to go on copulating out of control, and consuming out of control, all with the resultant stress and destruction this places on Earth's biosphere. We can sit in our little urban bubbles where we can block out all the nasty reality stuff, and fantasise about what color our first Mars SUV should be.
Don't worry about saving the green Earth. It has seen off worse threats than the current plague of destructive swarming primates. Maybe it's good that we have the Mars fantasy to distract us, even if it is totally delusional. Otherwise there is little but despair.

Janet say: exactly

D g say: less people on mars LESS PROBLEMS

David say: Sure you can save Earth. Just abolish global trade and abolish mass-migration. Jesus will do that when He returns. "Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matthew 3:2, KJV). Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
-
PhotonX say: Because we aren't *moving*, we are expanding. If humankind doesn't develop viable off-world colonies before the wrong asteroid or comet comes along to strike Earth, our species won't survive. That's not a good enough reason for you?
.
And " the green earth" will do just fine, with or without humans. It's human civilization that overpopulation and corporate greed are destroying, not the planet.

Dan say: It's a backup plan.
-
say: we have to ruin our neighbors too
