What is the most abundant chemical on any given planet?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
roberto say: as we find more super earths..we may find nature with local gravity hugely more powerful than ours,,we may find different elements have been incorporated into local wildlife, our respective biology mutually repellent for that reason,,here,,it is carbon based,hydrogen,,H2O
maybe elsewhere out there is silicon arsenic based 'life'
-
Jeffrey K say: Do you mean the most abundant element or compound? Do you mean on a planet's surface or in the planet?
Of course, it depends on which planet.
-
Rob say: That good old h2o like mama always said.
-
Ronald 7 say: Generally Hydrogen
-
ReductioAdAstronomicus say: On gas giants and ice giants it tends to be hydrogen, followed by elements such as carbon and nitrogen.

On terrestial planets it tends to be silicon, oxygen, iron, aluminium, etc.

Here is a useful article:

busterwasmycat say: There is no one specific chemical compound that is dominant on all planets. As a very general thing, hydrogen is likely to be the most abundant element (in terms of number of atoms, even if not in terms of total mass) on any given planet, but it is possible for planets to lose hydrogen to space and become depleted in H with passage of time or even for there to be differentiation during planet formation that can cause atomic abundances of the planet to differ considerably from the atomic abundance for the solar system itself.
-
nineteenthly say: Hydrogen is the most abundant element and often the most abundant chemical. The most widespread compound on many planets is often water. On rocky planets I'm guessing it's either silica or iron-nickel alloy, although I don't know.
-
Bill-M say: Don;t you mean Element??
-
hoarseman say: Probably hydrogen -- number of atoms wise -- since it makes up 75% of the elemental matter in the universe .
-
John P say: Please name a planet or two. Too much effort is needed to look up facts for every planet!
-
duke_of_urls say: First, list the 'given planet's.
-
poldi2 say: Unknown, since some planets may be rock others may be gas.
-
Sandy say: each planet is unique, at least in our solar system.
