Is the universe made up of fundamental particles ,whose behaviour is controlled by the mathematics of waves or?
--from fundamental waves which can behave like particles

answers:
neb say: Quantum mechanics is a mathematical abstraction that works perfectly in describing phenomena. It is NOT a description of reality. That is why there are many reality interpretations. Many worlds, Copenhagen, Bohm, transactional, blah, blah. Some treat particles as waves, some don’t. Some have wave function collapse, some don’t. No one knows what the underlying reality is.

The absurdity of it all can be described in quantum field theory. The mathematics describes matter with a non-observable wave function whose dynamics are determined by an unobservable gauge field (at a point) which is invariant under an unobservable gauge symmetry which uses unobservable degrees of gauge freedom.

Starrysky say: There are no "fundamental particles". Parts of atoms are not matter--they are regions of energy that seem to be bound up in packets. They interact with others. But inside these energy packets there is a lot of nothing and some vibrating things we cannot yet understand. We call them strings, but they may not be string like or even real. They just vibrate in different modes to give larger items made of them a characteristic. The larger items we call quarks. They combine in patterns to make subatomic particles that we can detect interacting. But at the core of everything seems to still be nothing but energy regions or packets, not matter.
That is a lot of theory, not too many facts. But it does seem to explain a lot to things in a simpler fashion than other ideas.
Or the universe could be just a hologram. It might be just a non-material construction from some method of coming into being from outside of itself.

JosephV say: As @Mark has pointed out, math and physics are human constructions to explain Numbers and Forces in our universe, directly in the dictates of a being we call God, undeniable since the being is expressed in the intelligent hydrocarbons each with an electrical unit of mass 1.0 to 1.5 kg and located in the cranial vault. Those devoid a functioning such unit do however robustly deny it here, being clubbed in the group of ATHEISTS.

Ronald 7 say: The A4Z Fundamental Particles, behave the way, Nature preserves
-
Jeffrey K say: Both views are correct. Quantum mechanics says there is a particle/wave duality. Electons and other quantum entities have both particle and wave properties, but not at the same time. There is no classical common sense analogy.
-
CarolOklaNola say: Fundamental particles that can behave like electromagnetic waves governed by fundamental forces. There are no fundamental waves. There are two types of waves, sound waves and electromagnetic or light waves.

You may ha e noticed I said nothing about mathematics. Mathematics is a tool, a symbolic language that we use to help us explain the universe. If you don't understand the languages used, you cannot understand anything.

You are playing sarcastic word games when you say fundamental waves. You are confusing and deceiving others intentionally.

Fundamental particles and waves and fundamental forces govern how the Universe works. There is a LOT about the Universe we still do not understand.

nineteenthly say: Yes.
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: Basically, the answer is "Yes". It can be interpreted both ways.
-
MARK say: No, they are not controlled by mathematics. Mathematics is a human construct that attempts to explain the phenomena we observe. Therefore, mathematics does not, and cannot, control everything.
-
Morningfox say: Yes, to both.
Really, the universe is made up of "things" whose behavior is controlled by the physics represented by the Schrödinger equation. These things are not particles, they are not waves. They are quantum systems. It is only us poor deluded humans who think that things have to be either particles or waves.
