NASA is actually holding a Press Conference tomorrow about this very subject.
The conference is due to be held at 1900hrs British Summer Time.
Perhaps they have evidence to enlighten us.

timespiral say: It depends on what "alone" means. If we find microbial life elsewhere does that mean we are not alone or do they have to be complex intelligent beings? I assume you mean life similar to us.
I think that It is very unlikely that we are alone. However, it is possible, for practical purposes that we are alone. The size of the universe is beyond enormous. The possible scenarios might be:
1-direct encounter
2-signals received from their technology
3-their civilization expired long ago (just like some on Earth)
4-they live on the other side of the galaxy or in a galaxy far far away.
5-they think we are as interesting as earthworms and have chose more interesting worlds.
I think 3-5 are most likely, and 1 the most unlikely. We might find microbial life in stars/planets near Earth, but I doubt anything advanced.
