Note that astronomy and astronautics are two very different topics.
Astronomy is a science that is concerned with the study of the universe, mostly concerned with large objects at a great distance.
Astronautics is a political and engineering field concerned solely with making humans survive in a place that is totally unnatural to us.
As I see it, the more money that gets squandered on the obsolete practice of astronautics, the less money there is to apply to astronomy.
Hopefully we can resist the political and media induced pressure to spend the trillion dollars or more to go to Mars, so that money can instead be spent on astronomical observatories and probes that will help us answer some of the most chllenging questions about our universe.
Cheers!

by robots 100% already launched
by men about zero cost , planning equipment etc
Astronomy is NOT intended to be a "profitable career" getting the knowledge to do any science is valuable.
most people are doomed to be 'berger flippers"
NASA is underfunded because politicians are stupid. the pay back form science is enormous
Biology due to DNA is the coming science

no chance this century, it is way beyond us technically, financially and morally ( it will almost certainly be a one way trip) it will take dozens of spacecraft all launched together for supplies, fuel, emergency recovery, there is virtually no chance of a safe landing on mars anyone who lands is unlikely to get off again, NASA destroyed two shuttles because of stupidity and ignorance they are simply not of a high enough caliber for such a journey anyway although they love to project a macho image

As we are just in the learning stages of realistic engine development for such a voyage. I don't think that is reasonable. But, in 1910 a meir 7 years after the first powered Wright brother's flight. had someone said "In 60 years, by 1970 we will have put a man on the moon and safely returned him." People would of laughed and scoffed at such a silly idea. So, I would think 60 years is not beyond a reasonable time. The key is an economic reason rather than political one.
