Hello! What diameter would a meteor need to have to pose a threat to all life on earth
[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-20] [Hit: ]
I believe, would have to be on the order of 1.31 billion tons to have a significant affect on Earth-By threat you mean killing everything or causing some serious damage ?cause if you mean serious damage then 300-500 m should be enough to wipe out an entire country and casue some serious damage .but to destroy earth i think that the meteor should be a tleast 1.5 km-The meteor that finished off the dinosaurs was estimated to be about 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter.......
If Earth were to be hit by a meteor like the on which wiped out the dinosaurs, humans could probably survive if we were prepared for such an event. We would need to store sufficient food and we would need to have oil, gas and coal in the ground to avoid having to use duct tape to construct makeshift fast breeder reactors. The hydrocarbon fuels (or the hastily constructed breeder reactors) would heat homes and heat and light greenhouses.

I'm sorry people are giving you so many different answers but I have to add one of my own :)
It's not so much the diameter of the meteor but the mass of it
And the mass of it, I believe, would have to be on the order of 1.31 billion tons to have a significant affect on Earth

The meteor that finished off the dinosaurs was estimated to be about 6 miles (10 kilometers) in diameter.

well, like bullets, this would depend to a degree upon the velocity of said missile.

6 miles
