If so, why havent they landed on mars? Its only 100 times further away!

Yes, SIX times, and, as human beings usually do, they left a lot behind.

You have to have heavy launch vehicles to get to Mars. We are building new ones NOW, since NASA finally decided on a design in September.

Excuse me. Congress is STILL being INCREDIBLY asnine. RECALL/ VOTE THE IDIOTS OUT OF OFFICE.

Yes. 12 men landed in six missions to the Moon. This was the greatest achievement in the history of mankind, and required an all-out effort on the part of the world's scientists and the riches of the wealthiest nation on Earth. A trip to Mars would be at least a hundred times harder and more expensive, at a time when the U.S. is nowhere near as rich as it was in the 1960s..

Well, your numbers are wrong. 100 times only applies when the Earth and Mars are at the closest point of approach. The orbital period of Mars is about 2 Earth years, so every two years we are on the same side of the Sun. In between years, we are on the opposite side of the Sun from each other. So, the reason why we have not gone to Mars YET is simple logistics. We do not have the craft that are able to make the trip with man on board. Unmanned craft have been in space for YEARS before arriving at Mars. For us to go to Mars, we would have to leave before the closest point, so we would arrive AT the closest point, and then leave almost immediately as the distance back would get longer every day. Longer distance means more supplies, oxygen, water, food, are needed to support the crew. We simply do not have the spacecraft capable of supporting a manned mission yet... As for not landing on the moon, that is an OLD and TIRED urban legend. I am not going to repeat yet again the reasons WHY the landings are NOT a conspiracy. Yes, the moon landings really happened... Look it up yourself. THAT is exactly what search engines are FOR, you know...

Yes, man landed on the moon. It was expensive, and dangerous, and Mars would be even moreso, which is why we haven't (so far) made that journey. Yet.

-
YES.

A mission to Mars would take years - we need to figure out how to get astronauts to survive that long (astronauts in space suffer loss of bone mass and changes in red blood cell shape amongst other things).
