For example, the ordered pair (2, -1) is a solution to the following system of linear equations;

2x - 4y = 8 _&_ y = 3x - 7

Plug the ordered pair in, and solve to prove it does indeed fulfill the equations;

2x - 4y = 8

2(2) - 4(-1) = 8
4 - (-4) = 8
4 + 4 = 8
8 = 8


y = 3x - 7
-1 = 3(2) - 7
-1 = 6 - 7
-1 = -1

The ordered pair fulfills both the equations, so it is a solution.

A linear equation has many possible ordered pairs (x,y) that "solve" the problem. These ordered pairs, say, (0,1), (1,3), (2,5)... all fall on the same line: y = 2x + 1

If two lines (on the same plane, or on the same xy graph) cross, then there will be exactly one ordered pair that is where the two lines cross.
