See, theres this New Age Mayanist movement out there that likes to pretend that the Mayans were magical alien supermen. They cherry-pick their archaeological or anthropological evidence rather vigorously, and arent adverse to just making stuff up. Actually, the Mayans didn't actually make any such prediction. The notion that there is some great prophecy about a new age OR the end of times is a modern invention. See, there's this New Age Mayanist movement out there that likes to pretend that the Mayans were magical alien supermen. They cherry-pick their archaeological or anthropological evidence rather vigorously, and aren't adverse to just making stuff up. Even if there was such a prediction, we would be back to "so what"? Predicting a "new age" is mumbo jumbo. And how would they meaningfully predict such a thing? Magic?

2012 is just one of about 100 doomsday predictions that will be completely uneventful.
the mayan long count calender is not a 'prediction' maker, it is a system of counting days, it turns over to a new lead digit in 2012, like our calender did in 2000. our calender is also not a prediction based one, but a time keeping one.
believe what you want, but remember, this doomsday is no more founded in reality than the one of 2003, the one of 2000, the one of 1999, the one of 1984, and about a few thousand others over the last few millenia.

The Mayans were a primitive culture which did not enjoy the modern predictive powers that we have today thanks to advanced science and technology. The combined resources of a couple of centuries of modern technology does not predict anything untoward happening any time soon.
