You would need a background in botany, biology, physics, and/or geology. Preferably a specialty in one, and solid knowledge of the others. Then be able to collaborate with individuals that specialize in the others.

Well there isn't going to be a Mars terraforming project within several human life times, so I wouldn't bother if I was you.
