it might not have been a comet, but something bright but small and it came from upwards really quickly and hit the ground in the distance it burnt out before it hit the ground.. i think I crapped myself cuz i was expecting some big boom ... do people see them with the naked eye?

You described a meteor, not a comet. Comets do not move perceptively, and can be seen for weeks or months at a time. Meteors can be very bright at times, especially if they break up in the atmosphere before hitting the ground.

Comets, from what we've been able to find out, are objects in our solar system which lose lots of gas and dust as they get nearer to the sun and warm up, forming what looks like a head and a tail. They're much smaller than planets, by the way, but about as far away. Once in a long while, we can see a comet with our bare eyes when they drift close enough and make a big enough head and tail. This usually is best seen at night. Seeing comets at all is pretty rare.
The things like you saw aren't comets, but probably very small rocky objects called meteorites; they hit Earth's upper atmosphere at high speed and begin to glow as they burn up from frictional heating by the thin air. They can at times come apart along fractures in their bodies to form multiple meteorites, and even come apart fast enough to generate sound waves loud enough to reach the ground. They usually range in size from dust-particle to small home appliance, but can be much bigger and leave a crater upon impact.

You probably saw a meteor burn up in the atmosphere. Comets move much slower in the sky and don't usually get that close to the Earth. In your lifetime you should get a chance to see a few naked eye comets. While most comets are only visible in a telescope every couple of decades or so brings a really bright one.

You might have seen a piece of space junk or an asteroid hitting the atmosphere. those hit frequently. I kinda doubt you saw a comet, that would be very rare.
-
A comet hangs in space approaching the sun - it is normal to see it if it is there.
Almost never does a comet get anywhere near earth.

That was a meteor, and seeing them is not all that uncommon.

I've never seen a comet in my life, they are very rare.
