I read this somewhere, is it true?

It is definitely possible. Elephants, other than humans, are the only living species on the planet known to perform any recognizable ritual around death. They've even been seen covering the corpses of their deceased loved ones, even elephants unknown to them, with things like leaves and dirt. There are many records of elephants helping each other when in need, regardless of their familiarity. They've been known to visit each other's graves for years, even if they didn't know each other. They remain very quiet around the bodies of fallen elephants, even helping humans in trouble. Most humans wouldn't try to help elephants in trouble.

they do revisit the bones of their dead, everyone touching them for a long time. I think it seems so because humans have all the other "crap" clouding up their picture.

For sure!
Do you have seen too many questions like "rate me, from 1-10" on this site? People only care for themselves.

The last time I talked with an elephant, it was indeed quite empathetic (that I can't drink water through my nose!)
