Saw a fairly large black critter by the side of the road. It had a flat
roundish thing extending from its body. It had been hit by a car so it
was hard to tell if that was the head or tail. I first thought it was a
beaver, with that type of tail. I had never seen a beaver in our area so
I wasn't sure it could be one. Then I thought it could also be a
duckbill platypus. Not sure if they are in our area either. What do you
think, beaver or platypus? I'm from Maryland, by the way.

Welcome to Yahoo Answers, Mr. Dad.

My advice to you would be to pick up the unidentified corpse, carefully clean and butcher the meat, and prepare a nice roast. Provided you have some experience with roadkill gourmet (you did say you're from Maryland, right?), you should be able to identify the cut of meat by the gaminess and texture.

Further, you now have a free meal. Have a hootenanny!

Well, I suppose it would be possible to get a Platypus in Maryland if it was carried from Australia by two African Swallows holding it on a line strung between their dorsal guiding feathers. Seems a bit unlikely to me, though. It would probably take three, or even four, African Swallows to carry a Platypus that far, and they don't usually like to fly in herds that large. A beaver seems more likely, since we have beavers in Maryland already, and the swallows would have less carrying to do. On the other hand, what if the flat thing was just its head rather than its tail. That would throw everything off. I just don't feel comfortable making the call when it could just as likely be a Mexican Hairless Giant-headed Flatcat as a Beaver. Sorry!

it was most likley a woodchuck...... http://www.google.com/imgres?q=wood+chuc…

if you were by a lake it may of been a beaver but check this website see if platypus are native to your area in nj there not. and also beavers spend 24/7 in water

Platypi are only found in Australia, so it is obviously not a platypus. Beavers should be in your area though, I am not sure.Badgers have a some-what flat tail, but aren't the same color as beavers.Flying squirrels have flat tails to aid in flying, but they aren't the size of beavers.

Honestly, anything can have a round and flat looking tail after being run over..

As Maryland isn't in southeastern Australia, there's a drastic shortage of platypuses in the state. In addition, beavers are much larger than platties. No person could sensibly describe a platypus as "fairly large".

seriously? You're not sure if a PLATYPUS is native to Maryland? How old are you?
