as winds head toward the islands, the air rises over the mountains and cools. As it cools, the air is forced to release the moisture, first in the form of clouds and later in the form of rain. This is called "orographic lifting." This creates a wet rainy climate. Then as it goes over the other side of the mountain on the island, the air sinks and warms. As it warms, the air absorbs the moisture in the air and first the rain stops and then the clouds dissipate. This forms a "rain shadow" on the other side creating dry desert-like conditions.
