We have a rather large basement. There are two small windows in the back, and below them are the dryer and washer. A little to the left and front of that is the water heater and the house heater. And to the left of that is a crawl space.
I know we should try to stay away from those windows, but the basement is a very open layout. So would it be best to seek shelter in the stair case? Exactly above that stair case is another stair case (we have a tri level house) so there isn't anything heavy that might fall through the floor.

The stair case is a good idea, however, I think the crawl space would be your best bet. This sounds like a full in ground basement, so anywhere away from windows, large objects that could catch fire or be used as missiles (i.e. furnace, water heater, and washer/dryer).

I have a tri level as well and would anywhere there is a door way . Bathroom , closet door way . Those seem to be the strongest supported areas in the house.

In a basement bathroom or in a corner with a mattress and pillows and blankets covering you if nothing else a staircase would work
