Tons of data here:

The fact is, however, that the number and magnitude of earthquakes this year is about at the average for the past 20 years. The same is probably true for volcanic eruptions.

One very big difference between now and even as recent as 10 years ago is that the communication is much, much faster. These days, you can get photos, videos and on the spot reports from almost anywhere in the world immediately. Think back (if you are old enough) to 20 years ago.... No internet, no cell phones, no digital cameras... Reports about some tragedy would take days, if not weeks to get out to the wider world. That fact alone makes it <> like there are more things happening, more often, in more places. That is not true. It is only the reporting of events that has improved a thousand times.

100 years ago (even before my time-LOL) it is very possible that you would _never_ have heard of the earthquake in Chile, or the one in New Zealand, and, at best, it would have been a month or more until a sailing ship arrived from there to some US port and carried tiny tidbits of news. That would end up as a few paragraphs (no photos of course) in some newspaper. If you did not happen to read _that_ newspaper, you wouldn't know.
