Could it be that they were one of the first ??

Some Spiritualists say that the Spirit can evolve into different manifestations and that death is just an illusion. This obviously wouldn't be a biological evolution, but to me it seems an interesting concept and would help explain why there is different types of apparitions.

I'm not too sure what you mean by ''One of the first'' but if death is an illusion then there might not have been a first.
