It doesn't mean anything 'cos it is not real. But if you believe in such bs an intelligent haunt is supposed to be the actual soul or spirit of someone dead hanging around so that they may be able to interact with you, or at least be aware of their situation whereas....
an imprinted or residual haunt is just supposed to be left just over 'energy' replaying from a traumatic or oft repeated action, I suppose you could compare it to a footprint left in the mud after a battle.
Except that footprints are real and until some one can come up with real evidence for it this residual haunt stuff it is a load of bovine excrement.
