On the other hand, the first Europeans to travel down the Amazon described thriving civilisations on its banks. Decades later almost all signs of those civilisations had disappeared, presumably because of the destruction of societies by disease. Anything built was built in wood (there is little stone in the Amazon Basin) and, after people died, the structures rotted away and were lost in the jungle. It is only with modern aerial surveying techniques that the roads and earthworks associated with the civilisations have been re-discovered.
