Well I went to get seconds tonight for dinner, and I noticed that the stove burner the food (in glass btw) was on, was still on. I asked my dad to turn it off and said ok, I turned it off and he came in and moved the glass over on a cold burner because it was steaming/smoking. When he did that the while glass container basically exploded. Glass everywhere. (no one got hurt I believe)
Why does glass shatter when temperature is changed drastically?

expansion and contraction of different parts of the glass. this sets up mechanical stress just like being hit with a hammer
the outside cold gets smaller while the inside hot is still large. the change in size causes the outside to squeeze and crack
a similar trick is done with glass marbles and cold water
it takes a special kind of glass (Pyrex) to resist that
metals stretch and do not shatter.
if there was still liquid in the glass pot it would have been only 212 deg f and not enough to shatter

Glass is a poor conductor of heat.
All things expand when heated.
in glass one end can be heated and expand when the other end does not and causes it to break
