Why did the Dr. disregard George Zimmerman's Nausea as stress and not a concussion

Why did the Physician's Assistant disregard George Zimmerman's complaints of feeling very nauseous the day after having his head slammed on the pavement by Trayvon Martin? I thought that was a symptom of a serious injury. She said he didn't need to go to the hospital.

There are several factors to this medical opinion.

First, this PA simply may have had the simple opinion that Zimmerman's post day nausea was attributed to the stress of the recent event rather than brain injury. This opinion could very well be correct. At this point it is literally impossible to know.

It is speculative at best.

Nausea associated with head injury is due to swelling in and around the brain -- which places pressure on the brain and structures within,.. and a very common symptom of this excess intracranial pressure is nausea. So you are smart to point out this possibility. It should not be dismissed as a potential causative factor of his nausea.

In fact, if Zimmerman was experiencing Nausea after the head injury he should have sought immediate care. That said, most people aren't physicians or even have a thorough understanding of neurology following a brain injury leading to concussion. Thus, it cannot be argued validly that "if" Zimmerman failed to seek post day medical attention due to this symptom that he did not have increased pressure causing said nausea. He likely, if he didn't seek followup attention due to the symptom, just shrugged it off as a benign symptom that would be self limiting. In which , luckily for him, it was.

The physicians assistant incorrectly stated that he didn't need to go to the hospital. She is basing this off of hindsight, in the fact that he suffered no adverse effects in the long term from the blow to the head. Thus, of course, he didn't need medical attention.

There are many cases of persons who experienced a rather mild blow to the head (even a light fall) ... then later developed nausea and ended up dieing from the hemorrhaging being uncontrolled. (Famous example is Natasha Richardson,. IIRC, Liam Neesons wife -- who fell rather forcefully onto the snow while skiing. She got up from the fall was completely fine and coherent.. was examined by medical officers on the Ski resort and went back to her room. She later died from the brain injury. ) The point here is the fall she had would have not caused a brain injury in 99% of people.. and goes to show you how volatile any blow to the head no matter how forceful can be.
