How to solve (a+1) with the exponent of 2

Can someone answer my question?-(a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2-use foil method.. FIRST INSIDE OUTSIDE LAST!......
plz plz help im not unerstanding this plz take me thru it step by step

foil (a+1)(a+1)=a^2+a+a+1=a^2+2a+1

It's not an equation, therefore it cannot be solved.

It can be multiplied out to
a² + 2a + 1

(a+1)^2,
(a+1)(a+1),
a^2+a+a+1,
a^2+2a+1.
Answer: a^2+2a+1.

Can someone answer my question?
