How can you look at a person's ID and easily detect that they are over 21 without doing math? I might become a waitress and will have to be able check ID quickly but correctly. I am embarrassed if I have to take too long to do the math in my head. Is there a way like "must have been born before this year on todays date" or something.

Determine if they have had their birthday this year or not.
If they have, they must have been born in or before (2012 - 21) = 1991.
Always put whatever year it currently is and subtract 21.
If they have not, they must have been born in or before (2011 - 21) = 1990.
Always take whatever year it was last year (when they should have turned 21) and subtract 21.

Or, this may be easier depending on your preferences, take their date of birth and add 21 years to it (So 9/9/1990 --> 9/9/2011).
If this is in the future, they are under 21.
If this is in the past, they have already come of age.

The place of business should have this posted somewhere if that business requires id for the sale of an item (alcohol or tabacco). Also, some states (at least the two I've had id's for: TN and FL) have different styles of id for under and over 21. In FL under 21 id's are printed in profile while over 21 are printed in landscape. In TN there was a red box around the person's portrait if they were under 21.
Aside from this you could simply look it up and keep a running date for yourself, in your phone or something.

Depending what state you live in, you may required to have an Alcohol Servers Permit. If so, you must take a class where you become educated in all things "Alcohol". Upon successful completion you will receive your cetification. However, most establishments selling alcohol will display a sign stating "TO PURCHASE ALCOHOL YOU MUST BE 21 AND BORN ON OR BEFORE TODAY'S DATE_______" just in case you space it on occasion :-)

If their id says "1995" then they're obviously not 21. It doesn't take long to check. 1991 means they are 21, or will be 21 later this year.
