why is it expanding and so big? i know its like a stone thrown into a pond and the ripples dissipate etc but i wish we could some how communicate with them.

Although its not likely to happen any time soon, perhaps one day we will have the technology and ability to generate enough energy to make something like warp travel possible.
Why is the Universe expanding and so big? I think that is one the main questions cosmologist are trying to answer. In short we don't "know" why the universe is expanding or why its so vast.
As far as communicating with aliens... that could be a double edged sword. When Columbus made contact with native Americans, it was the final nail in the coffin so to speak. And the more primitive natives succumbed to disease and war very rapidly. Historically, when a more technologically advanced civilization contacts a more primitive one, its usually bad news for the guys with less technology. In short, it may be a very bad idea to try to talk to a civilization that is maybe millions of years more advanced than our own. On the other hand, it could also be incredibly enlightening too. The sword has two edges.

So does every other person fascinated in potential Martian life. The reason the universe is expanding depends on your religion. If you are an evolutionist it's because there is the Big Bang theory that has a center universe sending out red waves (you could call it) that are making the galaxies move farther away from eachother. Quite inconvenient actually...

Don't worry. Our galaxy isn't getting any bigger. That only happens on scales of many millions of light years. The distances to the stars is still phenomenally large though. We could talk to the nearest star if there were life there, but it would take 8 years to get an answer and up to 32 years for the nearest 50 stars.

i know, its a shame all the distances are so impossibly far.
but then we are lucky that our neighbor planets are close enough to actually send robots and stuff there. i wish we would be more focused on space exploration so we can visit the moon and stuff.

I for one do not wish to achieve contact with aliens. If they're anything like us, they will be compelled to crush/dominate us. Contact with aliens just means war with other humans along with other species. I do not look forward to this.

I wish that idiots like you wouldn't post here, but it is just a wish.....
