Why is x=|y +2| not a function

-One rule that an equation must follow to be considered a function is that no x values can have multiple y values.Pick any positive number greater than 2.Ill pick 3.y can equal -5 or 1.If you graph the function, youll have 2 lines.......
could you show your work please so that i can understand? thank you :)

To be a function f(x) we MUST have the condition that for any x on the domain there's only ONE corresponding y.

Let's test with x = 1, for example:

x = 1 ---> |y+2| = 1 ---> y+2 = 1 OR y + 2 = -1 -----> y = 1 - 2 = -1 OR y = -1 - 2 = -3

For the same x = 1, there are TWO possible y values, so it is NOT a function of x.

One rule that an equation must follow to be considered a function is that no x values can have multiple y values. Pick any positive number greater than 2. I'll pick 3.

3 = |y + 2|
y can equal -5 or 1.

If you graph the function, you'll have 2 lines. One above the x axis, and one below the x axis that's an identical reflection of the other line.

Well first of all it should be F(x)=|y+2|, but I think you have to get y by itself... but make it f(x)...

Hope I helped

Functions have f(x) on one side of an equation. And if you didn't know, f(x) is just another name for y.
