Female pubic hair protects the vulva, but male pubic hair doesn't serve much of any purpose it seems like.

1. One possibility is that it slows down biting flies from getting to a moist sensitive part of the body. You can feel the fly moving on the hairs, so you'll know to swat the sucker. (This was more important in parts of the world that are warm so people wouldn't wear so much clothing).

I think it has to do with scent glands. Humans have a concentration of scent glands on the head, in the armpits and groin. It can't be a coincidence that those are the areas with long hair.

Perhaps you should be asking "Why do males have pubic hair?" rather than presuming an evolutionary purpose.

It does serve a purpose. Protection. Sometimes intercourse can be rough and it may damage the part.

I believe one idea is that it prevents too much skin to skin friction during intercourse
