"Create a labeled diagram of the Brick. Use x to represent the length of a side of the base of the candle. Then write an equation for the volume of the candle in terms of x. Write the polynomial in standard form."
The base can vary, the height has to be 1cm less than the side length of the base.

I don't want anything done, I kind of want an explanation on what to do, I'm completely lost.

You are to create a diagram and write an equation.

Draw a cube with boths sides of the base labeled x, and the height labeled (x - 1). (OK, technically it's not a "cube", but you get the idea). So your volume is:

V = x(x)(x - 1)
V = x^3 - x²
