include workings out please!
1. a component of a machine has 2 parts. the length of 1 part is 1 3/4 inches. the length of the other part is 2 1/3 inches. in order for the component to fit the machine, the total length must be less than 4 1/8 inches. will the component fit the machine? you must explain your answer.
2. find the fraction which is halfway between 3/4 and -1/3.
3. a club has some members who are adults and some who are children.
2/3 of the members are children.
1/4 of the adults are men.
1/2 of the children are boys.
what fraction of the members of the club are female?
thanks :-)

1:
for the 1st question, you just add up both fractions and see if it's smaller than 4 1/8
1 3/4 can be written as 4/4+3/4 or 7/4
and 2 1/3 can be written as 6/3+1/3 or 7/3
now add 7/4 and 7/3 by finding a common denominator. Which would be 12 in this case.
7/4 = 21/12
7/3 = 28/12
now just add those up
21/12 + 28/12 = 49/12
You might know that 48/12 = 4 so you're bascily left with the fraction 4 1/12
this is smaller than 4 1/8th so the component will fit.
2:
for question two, we again add up both fractions, but then we divide the answer by 2 so you get half of it. (the mean)
3/4 + -1/3 = 3/4 - 1/3 = 9/12 - 4/12 = 5/12
5/12 = 10/24
half of this is 5/24
the fraction between 3/4 and -1/3 is 5/24
3:
1/4 of all adults are men. 1/2 of all children are boys. So that means, whatever is left, must be women/girls or in other words female.
1/4+1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4
so 1 - 3/4 = 1/4
1/4 of the entire club is female.
