I have been thinking for the past three years to drive to the north pole. I'm planning to set out in mid January. My starting point is Toronto, Ontario, how far north can i get to? What type of vehicle do i
need? what to equip it with? (off road parts) and is it possible?

The end of the Trans-Taiga Road is the farthest north you can drive on a road in eastern North America.
Prudhoe Bay, Alaska(70° 19′ 32″ N, 2196 km from the North Pole) is the furthest north you can drive in North America. The road to Prudhoe Bay is a public road. The road from Prudhoe Bay to Point Barrow (the most northern point in Alaska) is private, and off limits. The road ends about 13 km from the ocean. The rest is private roads to the Arctic Ocean, and you need written permission for this (or be part of a formal tour group, taken by an established tour operator). Past that, you need sled dogs.
As for a vehicle, I recommend a Toyota Land Cruiser; they are designed to meet _most_ off-road driving requirements. Cracked windshields and headlights are pretty common. Bring extra gas, tires, and cold-weather camping gear (yes, even in July!). And bug spray, lots of it. Don't think that XM Radio works that far north. You *will* need a good CB rig.

Starting in Toronto you could take young street which is the longest street in the world this would get you way up into Ontario. To go further North head west from Toronto to Winnipeg then north to Churchill this takes you near the arctic circle. If you want further north . from Winnipeg go West to Edmonton then north to Whitehorse and then Inuvik. Take winter road to Tuktoyuktuk . The last few thousand miles you would need to swim. The north pole is in the Arctic OCEAN. Suggest you look at a map first before trying this. The main obstacle is that there are few gas stations in an area that has no roads and consists of Islands

While the South Pole lies on a continental land mass, the North Pole is located in the middle of the Arctic Ocean amidst waters that are almost permanently covered with constantly shifting sea ice.

Nope. You'll run out of roads before you reach James Bay.
