By examining the numbers of different kind of pollen grain found in the mud ,scientists can work out the kind of plants that lived near the lakes at different times in the past.They (scientists) can look at the same types of plants living today and the temperatures that they grow in .

Because the pollen they found came from plants which don't grow in one specific exact tenperature, like 20.6 degrees or they dont grow - the plants grow in a wide range of temperatures. The types of plant pollen found do indicate the climate however - you wont find the same plants living in a tropical jungle as you would do in antarctica! (Thats just an example, you could be more accurate than that)
