Benzoic acid is soluble in water under hot condition only, but freely soluble in dilute sodium hydroxide (4 Normal) solution in cold condition.
To the solution of benzoic acid, add Sodium bi carbonate solution. Brisk effervescence can be noted due to the release of CO2 gas.
Or treat the benzoic acid with ethanol under hot condition. After heating allow it to cool. Pleasant smell of ester - Ethyl benzoate can be observed.
When you dissolve it in water under hot condition and if you crystallize under cold condition you can get needles of benzoic acid crystals.
