ok so oxidation number of oxygen is 2- and oxidation number of Cl is -1 which leaves
X +-2 + -1(3)=0
which leaves 5 for v? what am i doing wrong

actually i think that's right. when you're calculating oxidation numbers in big compounds like that, it is not unusual to get a weird oxidation number. in H2SO4, the oxidation number of sulfur is 6. you're not crazy, that's right.
