Hi, can't find how to do this question in my notes, would love an explanation too. Thank!
Compound A has a molecular formula C5H11Br. Compound A reacts
with KOH in ethanol to give compound B which when reacted with Y gives
1,2-pentanediol. Which of the following statements is true?
a. B could be 1-pentene and Y could be H+
b. A could be 1-bromopentane and Y could be B2H6/H2O2/OH-
c. B could be cyclopentene and Y could be cold, dilute KMnO4
d. A could be 1-bromopentane and Y could be cold, dilute KMnO4
e. B could be 2-pentene and Y could be H+

Diols usually arise from the oxidation of alkenes by KMnO4, but it's more than likely that A is actually 2-bromopentane, and the action of KOH in ethanol leads to an E2 reaction producing 1-pentene, a situation which really doesn't fit any of your answers.
